"A Legacy of Passion and Commitment to Excellence"
Our History
Since Wyevale Nurseries began in 1930, we have made it our mission to maintain our heritage, while driving the business forward. A pioneering company, rich with heritage built from humble beginnings. We’ve always been family owned and we actively celebrate this. It started with Harry Williamson, and continues all the way through to today, with Harry’s granddaughter Heather steering the business
1930
Wyevale Nurseries Founded
In the 1930s, when the world was transitioning and garden centres were a new concept, Harry Williamson began the journey of Wyevale and it's plant nurseries on a plot of land in King's Acre Hereford. This land is still with us today and has been growing plants for near a century
1963
First Garden Centre
Wyevale achieved a significant milestone by opening one of the first garden centres in the UK. Harry Williamson was able to offer potted plants to the public in tin containers, which was a technique he had learned from visiting the USA in 1950. The garden centre opened on King Acres Road just opposite the nursery.
1970
Peter Williamson
During the 1970s, Harry’s son Peter took active control of the family business. Wyevale transformed with four specialised production divisions: Trees (Open Ground and Container Grown), Transplants (where bare root hedges are grown), and Container Grown Hardy Nursery Stock. These divisions optimised efficiency and quality.
1987
19 Garden Centres
During the late 1980s the company owned a total of 19 garden centres. In 1987 the garden centre side of the business was floated on the stock exchange as Wyevale Garden Centres PLC. At this point the two businesses were separated and managed independently.
2004
Retired From Garden Centres
The Williamson family retired from the garden centre business to focus solely on the plant nurseries. Leading to great improvements in expertise, quality, range of plants offered, and specialisation. During these times Wyevale Nurseries reputation furthered as suppliers of excellent quality plants and as industry experts
2011
Heather & Simeon Williamson
Peter sadly passed away in 2011 and ownership of the company went to the third generation of the Williamson family, Heather and Simeon – Harry’s grandchildren. Today, they operate as joint Chair of the company and take an active steer in all aspects of the business.
