Aucuba japonica (Spotted Laurel) 'Mr Goldstrike'
A striking evergreen shrub that brightens shady corners with its golden speckled leaves, each one generously splashed with yellow as if touched by sunlight. The leathery foliage maintains its vibrant variegation throughout the year, creating constant interest even in deep shade where other plants might struggle. Small purple flowers appear in spring, occasionally followed by bright red berries on female plants when a pollinator is nearby. Perfect for urban gardens, it thrives in challenging conditions including dry shade and pollution, while resisting damage from deer. The compact, bushy habit makes it excellent for low hedges or foundation planting, where its colourful leaves can illuminate darker areas. Particularly valuable for adding year round structure to borders or containers in sheltered spots.
