Bareroot Rosa rubiginosa (Sweet Briar)
A charming wild rose with a delightful secret - its foliage releases a sweet apple-like fragrance when brushed against, earning it the common name sweet briar. In early summer, single pink flowers with pale centres decorate the thorny stems, followed by oval red hips that persist into winter. The pinnate leaves have a fresh green appearance with slightly hooked prickles along the stems, forming a dense, bushy shrub perfect for informal hedges or wildlife gardens. Thriving in poor soils and exposed positions, it grows with an upright, arching habit that requires minimal care once established. The scented foliage, colourful hips and dense growth make it valuable both for sensory gardens and as a tough, low maintenance hedging plant that provides food and shelter for birds. A resilient yet fragrant choice for naturalistic plantings.
