Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam)
This classic deciduous tree is highly valued for its dense, fluted silver grey bark and neatly pleated green leaves that turn golden yellow in autumn. Its strong, flexible branches make it perfect for formal hedging, topiary, or pleaching, holding their crisp brown leaves through winter for added screening. Adaptable to various soil types including clay, it thrives in both sun and partial shade while withstanding urban pollution and strong winds. The catkins in spring provide early interest, followed by winged nuts that attract wildlife.
