Ilex aquifolium (Holly)
A classic evergreen with glossy, spiny leaves that bring structure and year round interest to any garden. Female plants produce vibrant red berries in autumn that persist through winter, creating a festive display while providing essential food for birds. The dense, slow growing habit makes it perfect for formal hedging or as a security barrier, with its prickly foliage deterring intruders. Adaptable to most soil types including clay, it thrives in sun or shade and withstands urban pollution remarkably well. With proper pruning, it can be maintained at any height between 1 and 10 metres, offering versatility for both small and large spaces. The leathery foliage resists wind damage, making it particularly valuable for coastal or exposed sites where other evergreens might struggle.
