Variant

A robust and fast growing tree, instantly recognisable by its brittle twigs that audibly snap off in strong winds, giving it a distinctive character in the landscape. The glossy green leaves with their pale undersides create a shimmering effect when stirred by the breeze, while the bark develops deep fissures with age, adding winter interest. Particularly suited to wet areas, it forms an excellent windbreak or riverside specimen where its vigorous growth can be fully appreciated. In spring, yellow green catkins appear before the leaves, providing early forage for bees. While often seen as a large tree, it responds well to pollarding, making it adaptable to gardens where regular management can control its size while maintaining its ecological benefits.
