Variant

A dazzling deciduous shrub that brightens gardens with its golden yellow foliage, creating a striking contrast against darker green plants. The leaves emerge a vibrant lime green in spring before maturing to a rich gold, maintaining their luminous colour throughout summer when planted in full sun. Flat clusters of creamy white flowers appear in early summer, followed by glossy black berries that attract birds and can be used for preserves. More compact than its green leaved relatives, it works beautifully as a focal point in borders or as part of a colourful mixed hedge. Tolerant of most soil types including clay, it thrives in sun or partial shade, though the foliage colour is most intense with plenty of light. The stems develop an attractive corky texture with age, adding winter interest to the garden.
