Variant

Deeply veined, near-black foliage with a rich plum undertone makes this striking perennial a dramatic addition to shaded borders and woodland gardens. The large, maple-shaped leaves maintain their intense colour from spring through autumn, deepening to near burgundy in cooler weather, while airy sprays of tiny cream flowers appear on tall stems in early summer. More vigorous and larger-leaved than many of its counterparts, it forms substantial clumps that work beautifully as ground cover or as a bold contrast to silver or golden-leaved plants. Thriving in partial shade with moist but well-drained soil, it's remarkably resilient to both pests and frost. Perfect for adding sophisticated structure to shady corners, it requires little maintenance yet delivers year-round visual impact.
